Climate Change/Global Warming
Debates and skepticism on this topic have existed for quite some time. The effects of global warming are becoming more noticeable as it increases. I found a number of news stories related to climate change such as: 2012 was the hottest year recorded in the contiguous United States, and levels of Arctic sea ice set a new low record.
Pollution
This can be related to climate change, but it also includes many other issues such as air and water quality, health, and destruction of the environment. I might narrow the topic down further into one of those categories.
Prison Overpopulation in the US
Overpopulated prisons can have a negative impact on inmates and guards. This can lead to increased inmate misconduct and tension and puts a strain on limited resources.
Right to Die/Euthanasia/Assisted Suicide
This topic seems to be appearing in the news more and more. The most recent news came from Ireland when a woman with multiple sclerosis lost her case for right to die. Moral and religious views as well as quality of life come into the debate.
Obesity
Obesity is a major health concern in the United States, and other parts of the world. A person is considered obese when they have a BMI 30 or above. This has a negative impact on a person’s health. Causes can include overeating, lack of physical activity, genetics, or some medications. Again I might narrow down the topic to one those things.
Renewable Energy
Energy from sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat is considered renewable energy. Many countries are looking towards renewable energy instead of fossil fuels because of climate change and high oil prices.
Youth Violence
Acts such as bullying, hitting, and assault can be included in youth violence. Youth violence can have physical and emotional impacts. It is the second leading cause of death for young people in the United States.
Endangered Species
Plants and animals become endangered for many reasons: destruction of habitat, pollution, hunting/fishing, and exotic species introduced into new ecosystems. Many organizations exist to help protect endangered animals. Plants and animals are important to their respective ecosystems and can provide medicinal, agricultural, commercial, and aesthetic/recreational value.
